Here are some additional opinions about Firefox. From all the responses I've learned that as a Mac user Safari is best and use Firefox as a back-up. I am sure you have been flooded with responses but I could not help but put my 2 cents in. As a Mac only household in a PC world (my husband uses PC's at work, my children have PC's at college and in the workplace, and I have PC's in my school library), Firefox helps bridge the gap. What Safari can't do in a PC world, Firefox does. My school district is Mac unfriendly and even our website has a hard time opening all windows on Safari. Firefox not only opens the site but it opens all the individual windows. I even have Portable Firefox on my thumb drive and use it on my PC at school. Firefox is the way to go... OPEN SOURCE is the way to go!!!! Enjoy Firefox. _____________________________________ I really like it. The tabs feature is nice - much easier than multiple windows. However, the history feature isn't great if you are trying to pinpoint when a student accessed a site. This probably won't be a problem for elementary, but for MS/HS study halls it is. ______________________________________ Perhaps this is a further example of PC and Mac not playing well together? What I've found is that if something won't work for me when I am using Safari, if I switch over to Mozilla Firefox, it WILL work. I get a lot of "not supported by this browser" messages when I am using Safari, but rarely have that difficulty when I use Firefox. I use both Mac and PC and started having difficulties interacting with my university's registration program (and the distance ed software won't even work with Mac at this point). When I talked with tech support about it, they suggested that I try Firefox instead of Safari (though they are trying to track the problem down). When I switched over, I was able to access the registration websites. I suspect that the question of which is better depends a lot on what sites you access most frequently and what other systems you interact with. I'm finding Firefox to be far more dependable than Safari (I'm using Version 2.0.3 for Mac OSX) for my uses. It is definitely faster on both my PC and my Mac. ____________________________________ I know our tech guys don't like Firefox for the Macs, but there are some web applications that run better in Firefox than Safari. Two examples are our web-based email system from school, which is Outlook. I constantly have to put in my password on Safari but it works like a charm in Firefox. Also, anyone who is working with LiveText from a university will want to use Firefox as it makes all of the features available while they don't all work in Safari. Personally I prefer Safari but have to use both for the above reasons...keep them both available and if something doesn't work on one then try the other. Firefox does have a lot of the features of Safari like tabbed browsing and the popup blocker but there are some differences between the two on Macs. For Windows I would certainly use Firefox as it is more current technology...IE and Netscape just haven't kept up... _________________________________ Susan Davis Media Specialist Bennett Elementary School 1755 NE 14 Street Fort Lauderdale FL 33304 754-322-5464 FAX 754-322-5490 susan.davis@browardschools.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
