If your web filtering software allows you to rewrite URLs (some do, some do not)
you can stick "&safe=on" at the end of the URL and it will force "strict" safe
search to be turned on.

I contacted Google about this and asked if they would be willing to force this
setting on all access from the IP addresses of schools who request it. They said
that they did not have any plans to offer that service at this time. (About a year
ago.) If enough people request it then maybe they would do that.

If anyone is using Squid/SquidGuard for filtering I wrote a small wrapper for
SquidGuard to do this. Contact me and I'll be happy to share it.

Recently our students have discovered that if they go to Google Images and
type in p0rn that they will get inappropriate pictures. Of course, there are
other topics that can trigger the same problem. I know that Google Images
has a setting that can block this, however, my question to you is two-fold:
1) Is there a way to set it so it stays that way once it is set, i.e. when
the computer is turned off, does it lose its settings? and 2) Is there a way
to prevent the students from changing the setting? I went into the archives
and read Nancy Willard's posting about it being illegal for schools to block
Google Images. Her suggestion was to allow either the teacher or librarian
to be able to unblock the site "without significant delay" which I don't see
happening anytime soon in my District. Can anyone help??
