This sounds like Nothing But the Truth by Avi. In this book, the
boy hums the Star Spangled Banner to purposely annoy his homeroom teacher
who is also his English teacher. His hope is to get out of her English
class (which he is failing, making him ineligible for sports). The
reactions to him being suspended for this action snowball out of control as
a school board member, the press and others try to put their own spin on
this issue to suit their own agendas.
Does this sound like the book?

A teacher asked me to find a book she remembers about a boy who refuses =
to stand for the pledge of allegience. Eventually he does but for the =
wrong reasons. Does this sound familiar to anyone? She thinks it has =
"justice" in the title.
