One of the major trends in librarianship I'm seeing now is increasing
activism in light of the 65% solution. Another major issue prompting
activism is educating other educators (never mind the public!) about the
Lantz (and other) studies, proving the direct positive relationship between
quality libraries and academic achievement. I see it as a major frustration
that we are constantly in the mode of proving our worth -- that our
profession is still viewed as little more than expendable secretaries - by
our professional colleagues no less (many of whom have less education than
us!). Many of the complaints/issues/vents on LM_Net can be directly
attributed to the fact that "the powers that be" don't (won't) recognize the
value of libraries/librarians in terms of the educational success of our
students.

Subject: TARGET: Trends or Issues?

I'm researching some of the trends and issues in librarianship, and wondered
what the concensus might be among practicing librarians as to what they
believe are the trends or issues facing today's librarians / libraries?

How do these trends affect how librarians serve students / teachers?

What do you see as a trend in your library---is it technology? is it keeping
your job? is it outsourcing your collection? is it just trying to keep up
with what your job really means to others?

I'd love to hear what you think the trends might be. I'll post a HIT if
others are interested.

Thanks!

~Shonda
