When I began my first library job 13 years ago, the school I was working at had the policy of not letting K-2 in the non-fiction section. The library was very small and they'd never had a certified librarian before. The belief was that the younger students would "mess" the shelves up and the part time aid simply did not have enough time to keep them straight. It was also thought that nonfiction books were too "old" for that age group. Well, as we all know, younger children LOVE books about "real" things so that policy (which I seemed to be able to change at the time) really bothered me. At the same time, there were many books in non-fiction deemed "too easy" by the upper grade teachers and they would not allow their students to check them out for assignments or book reports. So, that next year I had a new section at the end of the early readers labeled "ENF" for Early Non-Fiction. I pulled books from non-fiction I thought the younger ones would enjoy. This was before our district had AR and the reading levels were not so easy to asertain. ENF was an instant hit and success with all parties and I felt much better about the whole "freedom to read" issue. Until something changes in your library, doing something like that might be a good idea. Lynn Lynn Butler, LMS Lamar Elementary Library San Angelo, Texas "Reading is a Window to the World!" -----Original Message----- From: Sylvia Jacquard [mailto:sjacquar@CA.INTER.NET] Sent: Saturday, March 04, 2006 12:27 PM Subject: TARGET: Arrangement/Signage of Primary-2 nonfiction Dear Netters: I have been fortunate to have some new bookshelves installed recently, enabling me to establish a separate Primary-2 nonfiction section. A separate section is necessary because my library is on two floors and the P-2 students are not permitted to go upstairs, thus essentially denying them access to nonfiction books. I have wanted to remedy this, and now I can. What I am wondering is . . . does anyone do something different in terms of arrangement (baskets?) or signage (pictures?) to make it easier for these younger ones to find nonfiction books.
