Almost ten years ago now I wrote an article "A New Section for Beginning Readers: J for Junior Nonfiction" by Sharron L. McElmeel in Library Talk, Jan/Feb 97, Vol. 10, Issue 1, p 7+. A full text copy of the article is linked from the bibliography at http://www.mcelmeel.com/writing/ I think the principles of the collection would still hold true -- it was immensely successful in channeling younger readers to books that appealed to them.
