I've also tried getting the syllabi from teachers and didn't have much luck. When I
went to the administration, I was also denied for the same reasons.

Finally, I realized how to 'catch them' at their own game. Since most of our
teachers (and at previous schools) were required to have a website made available
to parents, many were posting their assignments on the web. I would go to their
websites, download and print their information and keep it to help guide me in
collection development. This took about a year to get the information
compiled---but it was more than what I had initially!

If I knew that the students would be doing research on Ancient Egypt in March
(based upon the previous year), I would be prepared to help the teacher / students
with a collection of materials, websites, and even pathfinders / web modules.
Often, I would send the information that I gathered to the teacher and ask if they
would like me to post it on the library's site (another page would be created), so
that the students would be able to quickly find what they needed?

I haven't had many teachers refuse this type of help...and some have now started to
offer their syllabi for next year (and asking me about database purchases, books,
etc.) This is just what I wanted and instead of "trying to take it from them"
(which is what they thought I was doing---like I'm going to use my red pen and mark
through their terrible research ideas....), I would work to build their syllabus
and then share my results with them.

I think this was actually a form of collaboration...."sly as a fox style"....but it
worked (and IS working! I've had teachers in the library this year who have NEVER
used the library! Yeah!!)

Just a thought....

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if any of you request class syllabi (or something
similar) from teachers when doing collection development. I have had no
success in gathering syllabi by asking individual teachers. I went to
my administration (since they already have copies of all syllabi) and
asked for copies for myself and they are refusing. They're saying it's
the teacher's choice whether or not I can see the syllabi. I find this
absurd. How can I develop a collection that supports our curriculum if
I don't know what is being taught?

If you request syllabi from your teachers or administration, would you
please email me off list? I want to be able to show my administration
that my request is not unreasonable.

Thanks.
