When I use the almanacs with older (gr.7 and up) kids I always show them the
perpetual calendar and teach them how to find out what day of the week they
will turn 16. They love it. My 6's were also intrigued by the number of
chickens in various South American countries. We also use it for the 5's for
a "was it possible" exercise (inventions): e.g.: Was it possible for
Napoleon's doctor to examine him with a stethoscope? I spend some time just
letting them browse through it. They get pretty caught up in all kinds of
things. The the end of the year I always do a Mysteries of Research project
(from the book of the same name). The almanac is very helpful for that one.
