I think this is probably a universal problem. I still remember discovering one day
that we were missing all the Tomie DePaola books. Every single one. A teacher
needed them RIGHT AWAY, and got a custodian to let her into the library in the
morning, and was in too much of a hurry to leave a note. (One of those cases where
her lack of planning became my emergency.) The books did eventually come back,
thank goodness.

It's my reason for barcoding absolutely EVERYTHING. The teachers thought I was
nuts, barcoding remotes, extension cords, VHS-C adaptors, battery rechargers, USB
cables...but now I actually know who borrowed it a week ago, "just for a minute." A
teacher borrowed a 3-hole paper punch from me, and asked me if I wanted to stick a
barcode on before she took it!

Moving stuff sometimes helps, too. We had our digital cameras and flash drives in
a cupboard in the library office, and we noticed a developing trend of people
helping themselves to the materials without stopping at the circulation desk. So
we moved all the stuff to a different cupboard, so the staff will have to ask for
the materials again, at least for a little while.

Hello, sympathetic ear:

I don't need advice -- just a place to vent without making my
colleagues crazy.
How can we convince our otherwise wonderful classroom staff that they
must sign out library materials? How many times have I heard 'Oh,
I'm just taking this to my room for a minute' and the item is never
seen again? Everyone thinks he or she is soooo responsible and will
not forget. Each and every one means well.
Sigh.

Thanks.
