Again, I think Shonda is right on, and I applaud her for her willingness
to innovate. Thoughtfully.

I also think it's great to take a little gamble; see what flies and what
falls back to earth. Shonda obviously has the guts, open-mindedness, and
energy to do that.

And yes, I think we do need to INVESTIGATE every new means and
destination in media, especially those which naturally captivate our
students' attention. How and if we integrate new things into our menu of
offerings is the trickier call, though. I do not think that it should be
considered a given that if billions of kids do x by choice in their
spare time then libraries should automatically offer x too. Libraries
shouldn't consider themselves in the business of providing absolutely
every educational/recreational/leisure option a kid might want to engage
in in a given day. Gotta remember what business you're in; keep the
mission somewhat focused; and make sure that you can be the best
provider of a given service in your market before you take the plunge.
Speaking of taking the plunge, that's precisely why, despite the fact
that I KNOW they'd attract scores of new patrons, I have consistently
avoided installing waterslides in my facility.
