Alexie, Sherman. Ten Little Indians. (The book contains nine stories
populated by at least one American Indian, but "little" is a bit of a
misnomer; the book addresses human (not necessarily Indian), rituals,
ceremony, love, loss, insecurity over life choices, and personal
sacrifices. A lot of intense basketball is played, too." Amazon.com)

Eisenberg, Deborah. Twilight of the Superheroes. ("For those who love
her, this new book is a long awaited treat. Eisenberg continues her
adroit experimentation with point of view and characterization. Her
intelligence and razor-sharp compassion come through on every page."
Amazon.com)

Escandon, Maria Amparo. Gonzalez & Daughter Trucking Company (A woman
prisoner in Mexico has a weekly library book group in which she reads
"her own story" to the group.)

Hilts, Elizabeth, et al. Getting In Touch With Your Inner Bitch (A
humorous look at a serious topic-how to just stay "no", and defending
our boundaries.)

Menendez, Ana. In Cuba, I Was a German Shepherd. (Short stories that are
all related into one look at the Cuban refugee/immigrants experience in
Florida)

Nelson, Marilyn. Carver, A Life in Poems. (This is a beautiful book
written for Intermediate-High School students but totally loved by my
adult book group on the life of George Washington Carver, mystic and
scientist.)

Packer, Z.Z. Drinking Coffee Elsewhere. ("Packer's stories deal with
black men and women, mostly young and urban. Her carefully engineered
narratives treat listeners to the richness of highly developed
characters and lead them to some intriguing scenarios..." Amazon.com)

Peck, Richard. A Long Way from Chicago. (This book was chosen as a Quad
City Reads book and is appropriate for adolescents and adults. Our older
people loved it-truly heartwarming and funny! A brother and sister from
Chicago stay with their grandmother in downstate Illinois during the
summers of the Great Depression.)

Picoult, Jodi. Second Glance: A Novel. ("Ghosts and ghost hunters
collide in this compelling tale of the paranormal set in Vermont's green
mountains. The patriarch of the Abenaki Indian tribe that was nearly
eradicated by that state's eugenics project in the 1930s encounters the
miraculous survivor of several attempted they set in motion a chain of
events that will unravel an ancient murder and lead to a second chance
at life and love for the victim's descendants." Amazon.com)

Robinson, Marilynne. Gilead: A Novel. (An elderly Iowa minister writes
the story of his life to his young son as he is dying of heart disease.
This is a beautiful book with a lot in it about father-son
relationships.)

Rushdie, Salomon. Shalimar the Clown. (This was my first Rushdie book
and the language is beautiful. It goes on and on, but it certainly gives
a perspective on the situation in the Mid-east and the Islam/Hindu
situation between India and Pakistan.)

Shteyngart, Gary. Russian Debutante's Handbook. (A Russian Jewish
immigrant with a dysfunctional immigrant family tries to find himself
and success without too much exertion. This book is bawdy and funny and
a satirical look at the immigrant situation.)

"My own prescription for making poetry popular in the schools would be
to ban it -- with possession treated as a serious misdemeanor, and
dealing as a felony..." Clive James
