Robert Eiffert wrote "A big difference is who is doing the word selection. Subject Heading is a very controlled taxonomy; we even hassle each other about creating special SHs. Keywords come from selected sources also; the terms and notes we use in describing a book." I am not saying that Web 2.0 ability for "tagging" isn't a good thing, or that what we used to do is the very same thing. But I still think that it is interesting that one these new tools, that libraries and librarians did very similar things all along. While there is the Sears List of subject headings, I often create new subject headings such as Honors English list, or Math Reading list. We do/did bibliographies and share them. We can even add additional keywords to marc records so they can be searched even more. But I am also using del.icio.us and will be doing a workshop for teachers on this tool. Deborah Stafford Gen.
