In case you have some interest in going to a teacher seminar about the Civil War...mary ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Teachers, For 2006, CWPT now has a pilot program to provide financial assistance to first-time, out-of-state Teacher Institute attendees. Two teachers will be selected to receive a stipend of up to $750 towards travel expenses. Both recipients will be out-of-state attendees who cannot receive financial assistance from their schools and have never attended the program before. One student teacher and one established teacher will be selected by a team of judges. It is our hope that this financial aid program will help teachers who would not otherwise be able to attend. To apply, contact Jen Rosenberry, Education Coordinator, for an application. Completed applications must be received in the office by 5:00 PM on July 5th, 2006. No late applications will be considered. Decisions will be announced July 7th. Civil War Preservation Trust Teacher Institute ******************************************** The non-profit Civil War Preservation Trust is holding its fifth annual free Civil War Teacher Institute. It will be held July 28-30, 2006 in Richmond, VA. Education professionals who work with students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to attend. Professors who teach at the community college and survey course level will also benefit from the institute. Activities support professional development contact hour requirements in many areas; check with your school district. CWPT is teaming up with Virginia Tech to provide this program. Eminent historians James I. Robertson, Jr. and William C. Davis are among our featured speakers. Teachers will have their choice of focused workshops on Friday and Sunday. Our high point will be the field trip on Saturday, when teachers choose either Pamplin Historic Park/ National Museum of the Civil War Soldier OR Petersburg National Battlefield. In addition, we will have period entertainment on Saturday evening. To register, teachers should e-mail jrosenberry@civilwar.org or call 301.665.1400 X 204. They will then receive an application form to be returned to the address below. There is no direct cost, but there is a $50 deposit upon registration which is refundable after teachers attend the program. (Note: this registration deposit is waived for stipend recipients.) Only teachers will be accepted for the program – sorry, no non-teaching spouses or children will be accepted. Meals are included, but teachers are responsible for their own lodging and transportation. A block of rooms is being held for us at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Richmond River District, which is also hosting the program. The hotel is located at 555 E Canal Street, Richmond, VA 23219.
