I am gathering information, and I wanted to get a sense of what other private schools do regarding parents who ask what their child has checked out, in grades 5-12. I have resolved the issue to my satisfaction as far as overdue or lost books. This is a question of a random inquiry of "Does my child have any books checked out?" and/or "What does my child have checked out." I know what the ALA policy is, but my questions are: 1. Do you (small private school librarian) decline/refuse to tell a parent what books are checked out if directly asked? 2. If you do, how do you politely frame it to the parents, who (in most cases) are decent, rational people with what they feel are reasonable reasons for asking 3. Would it make a difference if the student handbook had a sentence under library policy that said "Library records are open to parents" so that students were aware of the library policy? You may reply to me directly if you wish. I will post a hit -- I do not plan to use any names. Thanks - Maggie K.
