I would argue whether there are "50 valid scientifically based research studies"
to support any
education philosophy, program or practice. Are there such to support the efficacy
of incentive
reading programs like AR? Are there such to the efficacy of writing models like
Six Traits or 4
Square or whatever?. Are there such to support the theory of constructivism or
multiple
intelligences? Are there such to support that the values that underpin so many
programs are,
indeed, those supported by the entire nation? I could go on.

One would have to argue whether we can afford the time to wait for "50 valid
scientifically based
research studies" before we implemented anything!

I believe in evidence-based advocacy but, after marking hundreds of masters-level
assignments over
time, it is apparent that research is like statistics or the Bible. You can always
find something
to support your point of view, and even if it doesn't , you can extract something
from it to make it
seem like it does.

What I do know, though, is that it is important that WE as individuals believe that
we are doing the
right thing and making a difference - because if we don't have that faith, why are
we bothering?
