You might suggest that not using the money to replace the books is, in effect, falsely misrepresenting its use. It is punitive in purpose, rather than used for book loss replacement. If yours is a public school, and parents/tax payers are paying to replace a missing book, but funds are being redirected, your school district could find themselves legally culpable. At the very least, if this is the New Order, then library patrons/parents need to be forewarned that there is a $25 fine (or whatever) for losing a book, and that the book possibly will not be replaced in the collection. If this were to happen at my school, I would kick and scream. As educators, we are not about punishing, but about accepting responsibility and learning discipline. Let us know what happens, please.
