I was at Fall Media Specialist Day at Valdosta State University last week and we discussed this issue there. One thing we can all do at the end of the year to 'prove our worth' is what Dr. Daniel Callison of IU highly recommends--prepare an annual report and distribute it to your principal, your teachers, your PTA/PTO telling what major achievements have been made in the way of reading promotion, how many collaborative projects have been done with classroom teachers, how your circulation has increased over previous years, how often the media center was used for special activities to promote reading, and how your school's spending on books and other forms of media compares with national and state averages. Those numbers are available from SLJ and school administrators do want to know where they stand comparatively. PTAs especially want their children to be attending a school spending the national average or above on books--if you are below they may shake loose some money for you. Start keeping track of your activities now so you can write a great report. It has always been beneficial to me and to my principals. They are looking for hard data to use in making their decisions and putting together their own reports. Cite the Ohio Study and others that reinforce how essential school media centers/libraries are to good schools. -- Cheryl Youse, MLS Media Specialist J. L.
