A Christmas book I didn't see listed in Barb Engvall's hit regarding reading for Cookies and Cocoa is Dear Santa, Please Come to the 19th Floor by Yin and Chris Soentpiet. Chris Soentpiet visited our school a couple of years ago and he was wonderful!!!! The kids and teachers loved him. In Dear Santa, Please Come to the 19th Floor, Best friends Willy and Carlos live in an inner-city apartment building located in a rough neighborhood. Carlos is in a wheelchair due to a spinal-cord injury; he is angry and struggling with the fact that he will never be able to play basketball again. Willy e-mails Santa and asks Santa to come see his friend. On Christmas Eve, Willy looks out his window and sees Santa's Sleigh parked on the street below. He runs to meet Santa and let him in the building. However, they find that the elevator is broken. Undaunted, they begin the long climb up the stairs to the 19th floor. Santa hands out gifts all along the way. He brings Carlos a basketball and hope. It's a story of true friendship and hope amid poverty and despair. Soentpiet's watercolor illustrations are beautiful and add feeling and depth to a moving story. Besides being a great read, it can be used to teach inference and predicting too.
