Advance registration for ALA’s Midwinter Meeting ends Dec. 8th. This year it’s in
Seattle from Jan. 19-24. Never been to an ALA Midwinter Meeting before? YALSA and I
have put together a short overview of things to do, which is attached to this
message. Print out this message so you'll have it handy to bring with you to
Midwinter (but double check hotel and room assignments as they do change from time
to time).

Midwinter is known as the “working” conference so the focus is more on committee
and business meetings than on programs. To learn more about Midwinter, go to
www.ala.org/midwinter, check out the Oct. issue of American Libraries, or visit the
ALA Midwinter wiki at http://wikis.ala.org/midwinter2007. To learn more about
YALSA at the ALA Midwinter Meeting, go to
http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/midwinter.htm.

On Arriving -You have two things to do-check in to your hotel and pick up your
badge and conference info [if you registered in advance, some of that is sent to
you, but you still need to pick up your badge holder and conference program] Wear
your badge at all times around the conference area. Your name needs to be seen, so
don’t cover it up.

At the Conference Registration area, look for the information booth about Annual in
Washington D.C. You can register for Annual on the spot - and be sure to think
about adding one of the YALSA Preconferences to your Annual activities. There are
two to choose from this year, a full day “Sins of YA Lit” and a half-day
“Beginners’ Guide to Teens in Libraries.”

Friday - Consider registering for YALSA’s “Building Teen Communities Online”
institute, and all day workshop that explores best practices in reaching teens
where they are: online. Head to the Convention Center about 5:15pm for the annual
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that opens the Exhibits. Then from 5:30 to 7:30pm visit the
Exhibits where exhibitors host a reception featuring food and lots of giveaways
from the booths.
After that go to the YALSA Video Gaming Night from 7-9pm at the Fairmont Hotel, the
Metropole Room. Registration is easy from the URL below.
http://www.ala.org/ala/eventsandconferencesb/midwinter/2007/otherevents.htm

Saturday -Many YALSA committees will be meeting at All-Committee, which takes place
from 10:30am to 12:30pm at the Westin Hotel, Grand Ballroom III. The Chair
Leadership Development meeting and breakfast is in the same spot for all Committee
Chairs (current and in-coming) and that begins at 8am.

ALA/YALSA policy states that all meetings are open meetings; the only exceptions
for YALSA are the three award committees: Printz, Edwards and Alex, and the five
juries. Registered attendees are welcome to sit in on the other committee or board
meetings, especially if you’re interested in learning more about a particular
committee and are thinking of volunteering to serve on one. Meeting information is
available on the YALSA website at http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/midwinter.htm.

Saturday afternoon you may want to visit some of the selection committee meetings:

Best Books for Young Adults meets from 1:30 to 5:30pm in the Washington Convention
Center, room 618-619.
Quick Picks meets from 1:30-5:30 in the Roosevelt Seattle, Wilson Room
Popular Paperbacks meets from 1:30 to 3:30pm in Renaissance Seattle, Superior Room
Selected Audiobooks meets from 1:30 to 5:30pm in the Sheraton Seattle, Admiral Room
Selected Videos/DVDs meets from 1:30 to 5:30pm and 6-10pm in the Convention Center,
room 306.
The YALSA Board meets on Saturday afternoon from 1:30 to 5pm in the Convention
Center, room 208. Attending YALSA Board meetings is a good way to observe the
governance of your division.

Sunday - This is a good time to visit the Exhibits again. Spend an hour or so
there and then head off to:
Teen Tech Week Kick-Off from 10:30-12:30pm in WCC rooms 608-609
YALSA/RUSA Joint Reference Task Force meeting is also on the Convention Center from
10:30 -12:30pm in room 302.

In the afternoon, there are several more joint youth committee meetings that you
might want to attend:
AASL/ALSC/YALSA Joint Intellectual Freedom Committee meets from 4 - 6pm at the
Convention Center, room 206
Our newest list, Great Graphic Novels begins their deliberations on Sunday at 1:30
at the W Hotel, Studio 7 & 8.
The YALSA Board continues to meet in their same room (WCC 208), from 4-6pm.

You could listen to the teens provide their comments to the BBYA Committee from
1:30 to 3:30 in the Convention Center room 618-619.

Monday - This day begins with a bang at the eagerly anticipated Youth Media Awards
Press Conference. This is the Oscars of the Youth publishing world, and YALSA
announces its ’07 Michael Printz, Margaret Edwards and Alex winners. Get there
early as the seats fill up, and the program begins at 8am sharp!!
Head to the Convention Center, Room 6B/6C

Exhibits close today, and publishers often mark their books for half price, so you
might want to go shopping. ALA also sponsors the ALA Store that has lots of
intriguing goodies to buy, as well as professional materials such as books and
posters. I’d advise you to shop early at the ALA Store as sometimes the supplies of
favorite items run low. Be sure to look for YALSA's Sizzling Summer Reading
Programs for Young Adults, 2nd ed., which was edited by YALSA’s own, Katharine Kan.

The YALSA Board also meets, in their same room, from 10am to 12:30pm

End your conference at the Joint Youth Division Membership Reception, held from 6
to 7:30pm, at the Red Lion Hotel, Emerald Ballroom II. This will be the official
kick-off to the YALSA 50th Anniversary celebrations. The reception is free for all
attendees, though it is a cash bar. This is a great way to end your conference,
mingle with people you’ve met, introduce yourself to folks you didn’t meet and wind
down from an exciting time. There will also be a few surprises to start the 50th
anniversary celebrations off right!

Questions? Contact me - jnelson@piercecountylibrary.org or the YALSA office at
yalsa@ala.org. And if you see me at conference, please come up and introduce
yourself!

Sincerely,

Judy Nelson, YALSA President
