Oh, yes Peter! Skippyjon won the Washington Children's Choice Picture  
Book award in 2005. It is truly delightful; unfortunately we had some  
teachers and librarians who over-reacted and thought it was  
derogatory to our Hispanics so there was quite a discussion about  
this. My experience was that the Hispanic children LOVED it. It is  
unfortunate that sometimes adults try to put too much into something  
that kids enjoy and take at face value. Made me think of the  
controversy years about over Maurice Sendak's classic of Where the  
wild things are.

Since you a high school librarian your grandson will have lots to  
share with you...and then you can return the favor when he is older!
