This seems to be one of the lessons that we, as a society, aren't
teaching our children: You can't always have everything you want, and
sometimes you can't have everything you need. Yes, I'm an old fossil,
but I can remember that one of my classmates arrived in a new Cadillac
every day, and others didn't even have a car. Since we were in town,
there was no such thing as a bus to take kids to school - that was the
job of the parents. Now, parents are fussing because a neighboring town
has said that bus service for those who live within one mile of the
school will no longer be free.

I see kids who have let everyone know that they are on free lunch (and
therefore don't understand why they should have to present a lunch card)
visit the slot (soda) machines three or four times each day - at $1.00
per visit. A full-price student lunch is $1.25. I also know of kids who
should be on free lunch but aren't. Their families do without what some
would consider necessities in order to pay for their lunches each day.
Still others bring their own lunches, which is cheaper yet. I rarely see
those kids at the slot machines.

Oh yes, why do I call them slot machines? Simple. You put your money in,
push a button, and take your chances. Most of the time you get what you
wanted, sometimes you get something else, and once in a while you get
nothing.
