I visited the Eric Carle Museum three summers ago with my then eighteen-year-old son. We were on our way to Boston for his orientation at Northeastern University and took a side trip. I was a little disappointed with it's small size. We were done in an hour, but I was enchanted by everything I saw. I just wanted more. I loved the library. When I browsed the shelves, I found When You Give a Mouse a Cookie on the "B" shelf and thought it was mis-shelved until I realized that the books are filed by illustrators last name! That made me chuckle. The cafeteria is filled with wonderful homemade, unusual food. I had curried chicken salad and a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie which had a hole cut out of it in honor of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which had turned 35. We ate outside on a lovely patio with a view of an apple orchard. My son liked the place. "It's peaceful here" was his comment. I even got a kick out of the bathrooms. The tiles are his various animals and there is a tiny little child-size toilet. And the gift shop was wonderful!!! I returned last November when we were visiting colleges in the Amherst area with my two youngest sons. Unfortunately, the second, non-Carle exhibit room was closed for an installation leaving only the room I had already seen.
