I need some help knowing how to catalog videos. Unfortunately I did not take a cataloging class for my masters degree. The video collection at my school has terrible cataloging, it was haphazardly done by a volunteer in the past. I am considering allowing students to check out videos, so I will need to clean up the collection as much as possible. In the Call Number, should I use the first three letters of the title of the video? This is what I have done in the past, but then if I have a book and a movie based on the book, they will not be shelved together. Also, last year I considered purchasing MARC Source from Sagebrush or MARCMagician to help me with this task. I have at least 500 videos, possible more since not all are even in the system. Would purchasing this service by worthwhile? I generally purchase cataloging when I buy books.
