Following Deb Logan's lead I will report that I, also, published an article
about the preliminary results of the ETS ICT exam in our local parent
newsletter and reprinted the article in my library
newsletter<http://rhslibrary.org/Library_Leaves.htm>(February
article).
It states many of the same concerns Deb's article did but is not quite as
sanguine about the overall program of ICT skills. In my district we have a
computer proficiency graduation requirement which can be met by taking a
class or taking a series of computer proficiency
tests<http://tamdistrict.org/instr/assessment/computers/index.htm>.
There is a small component (10 multiple choice questions) about information
literacy which the LMTs in the district got the administrators to add to the
test.
Although we certainly have an active program of teaching and learning ICT
skills which we are constantly developing and our district's
technology plan<http://tamdistrict.org/forstaff/tech/plan.pdf>,
like all California districts' has a major section on information literacy,
there is still, to my mind, a disconnect with the whole community about the
way to ensure these skills are taught and learned in the district.
I applaud Deb and encourage all of us to share not only lessons for teaching
and assessing such skills but also strategies for getting our schools and
districts to make these skills an integral part of every child's education.
