My original question was asking for specifics about processing and circulating Playaways. Thanks to all respondents. I began lending these this morning after demonstrating them to all 7th and 8th grades yesterday. I put the date due slip under the removable foam padding. They are flying off the shelf. I am going to shelf the case with our book collection. The Playaway cartridge will be kept at the circ desk. I am selling earbuds for $1 and lending the case with the cartridge and one extra battery. Responses from others follow: ----- I circulate the box, but take out the earbuds and battery. I check the battery life when they come back in, but I tell the students if they need a battery to come back and I will replace it. I tried to write on the outside of the playaway in Sharpie the call number and our school name, but it has rubbed off on all of them. I'm not sure what to do about that. But the kids love them. I have 11 and looking out onto the shelf right now, I only see one. I will order more next year. I will also more earbuds just to have on hand. ------ Ann, we haven't bought any playaways for our school library, but my public library is circulating them. They are housed in a videocassette box with custom foam for the playaway and lanyard. Instructions are printed on the inside. The casing has room for processing labels and a security tag -- obviously, they have it on display, and circulate it. Customers are told to provide their own earbuds. In the public library the playaways ARE kept in the casing -- as are the CDs and tapes for other audio books. I'm not sure what we will do when we eventually purchase them -- we chose not to purchase books on tapes because of security issues. ---- I also took out earbuds and will lend to students who need. We wrote CHS and our barcode # on the item with a fine Sharpie and put the barcode on the box. We're still learning but this looks good so far. ---- (I circulate) Just the Playaway and lanyard if the student wants the lanyard. The students know when they're due, and it's not an issue here because they finish these faster than they do their books since this school allows iPods, phones, etc. So, they can listen to them in class as long as they're not receding instruction. We put a strip on it that's equal to the security strip that we place inside the book. Very narrow strip. We loan earbuds to those who need them. The boxes shelve next to the books on the shelf. The cartridges are in our offices. Hope this helps. they've been popular. --- My Follett rep made a suggestion that one of his area schools was doing. He stated that the Librarian interfiled the empty Playaway boxes on the shelves next to the books to give them the option of getting the book with the audio. When a student wanted the Playaway they bring the Playaway box to the circulation desk and the Librarian trades the original empty box with a clear box that the system is in behind the circulation desk and checks out the audios that way. I am in the process of ordering Playaways for my library and I plan on doing a similar set-up here. My plan is to circulate the them for a week and see how that goes. I would like to circulate them for two weeks, because that is how long they can check out the print version. I, too am going to sell the earbuds for $1.00. ------ We have tried circulating both ways - in the box & out of the box. The kids prefer in the box and so do I. No headphones to circulate, however earbuds are for sale. We have left the extra battery in the box for now. How long the batteries last, I don't know. The disposal of batteries bothers me and I don't want to buy rechargable batteries since they might not always come back. We have been able to shelve playaway in the box, but that is due to our unique situation and the location of the audiobooks. We have a barcode on the playaway itself and our BC has our school's name on it. It's a tight fit, but it works although it covers some of the pretty picture on the front. There is also a BC on the box. Our students and staff love them and wish we had more. Follett has a winner! ------ Our public library bought plastic cases with a lock that has to be removed at the circ desk to keep the playaways from flying away in pockets. No lanyards. No earbuds. We also sell earbuds for $1 and do not deal with the health, hygiene and general ICK issues concerning recirculating earbuds/headphones. ----- THANKS AGAIN!
