Hello All, This year we are shaking up our summer reading program. In the past, it has always been run by the English department (with the exception of AP classes that have additional summer readings). This year the English department will still be responsible for one book at each grade level, but the second book will be assigned and assessed by the other departments in alternating years, for example, students entering their junior year will choose their second book from the science list. Most of the departments are not having any trouble finding titles but it is a little different with foreign languages. The department chair does not feel comfortable assigning a foreign language book to students over the summer when they will not have the support of the classroom teacher so we are trying to look at English language books that deal with French and Spanish culture/experiences. The House on Mango Street immediately came to my mind for Spanish but I'm sure there are others (something comparable that would appeal more to boys, for example). Nothing is coming to mind for French. My question is, can you think of any titles that would meet these needs? The book may be set in a foreign country or it may deal with the immigrant experience here in America (or elsewhere). Canada is another possibility. I'll be happy to post a hit. Thanks in advance for your help.
