That's my point -- Most school administrators are not concerned that the college program is accredited by ALA -- they want someone who can be certified -- it doesn't matter about ALA.... And most of these librarians really have no interest in ALA---and they don't see the benfit of going to a school that is accredited by ALA. So we have even more folks that ciuld care less about ALA -- and less of an influence on ALA Paula' "Foster, Nancy E" <FosterN@bsd405.org> wrote: Paula, I'm not sure what you mean by a "big deal," so I want to clarify what my original point was. From my experience, library media specialists that I know are excellent teachers who chose to go to an accredited school to learn how to apply librarianship in the school setting. The majority of these are excellent at their job. How much teaching experience do MLS programs offer? Having a media specialist from an ALA accredited school is not a big deal to schools. And the poster below mentioned a book challenge -- and wanting ALA In most places -- bringing in ALA would not be considered a positive -- "since all ALA promotes is porn on the INteret for kids" -- NOT my opinion but a general belief among alot of people. Paula "Foster, Nancy E" wrote: I have to weigh in on this, because in my opinion a library media specialist is first and foremost a teacher and secondarily a librarian. Not all librarians are necessarily effective teachers, and in a school setting, that's what is important. These "people who are filling the country up are teachers who choose to become teacher librarians by enrolling in academic programs designed for teaching skills students need. Should "we" break away from the ALA? Not I, after working so hard to become a librarian. Although I am proud and happy to be a library media specialist, I will always be a librarian first and foremost. In my opinion, that is essential to being a good library media specialist. The country is filling up with people who become certified as library media specialists without every having worked a single day in a library. This is because the emphasis on librarianship has taken a back seat to all the other roles we must play. A meaningful professional relationship with our local public librarians helps us to stay grounded in our own profession, and allows us to be of greater service to our students. If I were to find myself facing a challenge to a book, I'd want to have the ALA backing me.
