I think that what Paula says is true. But I don't think the show is over
yet. If I'm in a school where 90% of my colleagues have no idea what I
do, then I have work to do. Whining about it will accomplish nothing.
And I think too many of us are indeed keeping our "heads in the sand."

We need to be experts -- in the mission and the curriculum, the recent
history of our schools' test performance and the implications of the
disaggregated data, advances in technology and ways it can be
incorporated in the classroom to meet students where they live. We have
to be literacy advocates and instructors. Most important, we have to
model best practices and be lifelong learners ourselves, constantly
reinventing and improving our programs. And, yes, we have to be very
high profile, particularly with administrators who are feeling pressure
to do more and more while the dollars are shaved away.

Our profession is not changing. It has already changed. Radically. The
bus is gone and, if we're not on it, we'd better get running. No doubt
there are still a few years left when "business as usual" will be
allowed to limp along. But institutional education has changed and the
culture of our children has changed far too significantly for us to
think we can continue to do our work as we have done.

It seems to me that we can either face this as an awesome challenge and
a wonderful opportunity or ignore it and earn a dubious honor as the
last librarian in our respective schools.

I suggest that you take an overall look t what is going on --
You know that you provide a valuable service -- is fine -- but I would
say that 90% of your staff has no idea what you do -- and really doesn't
much care.

That is the problem -- so many librarians have put their heads in the
sand -- and not see the big picture of what is going on

Again -- go to the Bill Gates School of the Future --
read the research -- there was just an article on folks who use
bookmarking --
Look at some of the textboooks for folks working on getting a degree
in administration and see that libraries are rarely mentioned

You must look at the overall status of the profession =-

that I provide a valuable service to our students, teachers and staff.
Many do not have a clue about the information superhighway and the vast
amount of information and resources available to them.
