This process is only illegal if the material is under copyright. We have a number of videos in our collection that are property of the school (much like the football tapes mentioned earlier). I have had a number of requests for information on how we transferred our non-copyright videos to DVD, and will send that information to the requestors tomorrow. >>> LM_NET automatic digest system <LISTSERV@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> 12/5/2007 2:26 PM >>> Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 11:54:18 -0700 From: Vicki Sherouse <vsherouse@MCPS.K12.MT.US> Subject: Re: TECH Copying Old VHS Tapes to DVD It is completely illegal. >>> joyce wright <joycew@CORLEARSSCHOOL.ORG> 12/05/07 07:36AM >>> Have there been any hits with the copying of old VHS to DVD? I have some teachers who stilluse filmstrips and they want those transferred to DVD. Does anyone know an inexpensive way to transfer a filmstrip to a DVD? -----Original Message----- Subject: TECH Copying Old VHS Tapes to DVD Friends I am trying to copy our football coach's archive of old game films from VHS to DVD. I am using a GoVideo dual deck (VHS & DVD) recorder for this. I'm working on a tape from 1993 and am getting a message that it cannot be copied because of copyright! Does anyone know what I can do - these are tapes from 1993 that student managers taped while the games were being played (you know - the coaches - players & game film thing). All I did in 1993 was take the individual game films and tape them on to 1 master VHS tape. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. TIA. (I will post a hit if there is any interest.) =20 "VAN" ________ =20 Diane Van Gorden, Librarian Baker Middle School / High School Baker, MT dkvg3955 @ yahoo . com vangordend @ baker . k12 . mt . us =20 ________________________________________________________________________ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 14:14:41 -0500 From: "Hassett, Bob E." <Bob.Hassett@FCPS.EDU> Subject: Re: TECH Copying Old VHS Tapes to DVD IANAL, but my understanding of current U.S. copyright law is that the right to adaptation, which includes changing format, is the prerogative of the copyright holder. So if the movie, filmstrip, etc., is still under copyright protection, it may not legally be copied to DVD. If you own the copyright -- which may be the case with school athletic films, home movies, etc. -- then you may transfer it to any format you like. /************************************************/ /* Bob Hassett, Head Librarian */ /* Luther Jackson Middle School (081) */ /* 3020 Gallows Road */ /* Falls Church, Virginia 22042 */ /* (703) 204-8133 */ /* Bob.Hassett@fcps.edu */ /************************************************/ Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 14:17:20 -0500 From: sottovoce7@AOL.COM Subject: Re: TECH Copying Old VHS Tapes to DVD I don't think copying football game films that team managers shot is illegal. There are several ways to change it from VHS to DVD. One fairly simple way if you don't have the right software is to use a digital video camera and plug the video and audio out from the?VCR to the camera in. Many cameras come with cords that can do this. Record the old VHS video onto the camera using the VCR setting. Once on the digital tape you can then load the video onto the computer and?into an editing program and then record to DVD.
