Hello LM-Netters!

I have a niece and a nephew that are desperate for good books. Since I am a school
librarian and love books, I'd like to get them some great, newer books as Christmas
gifts. Because I'm a primary school librarian, I have very little knowledge of
books for older children and I need to be careful of the content of these books.

My niece is in 5th grade and reading at an 11th grade level. Her parents are having
a difficult time finding books that are challenging enough for her yet have content
appropriate for a 5th grade girl. Her interests are in horses/animals, fairytales,
historical fiction (she loved the American Girls and Dear America series), etc.

My nephew is in 7th grade reading at a 9th grade level. He is very introspective
and at a stage where he questions everything. He's read all the Harry Potter books
several times over. He loves fantasy (maybe too much?). When he was younger, he
really liked Ann M. Martin's book "A Dog's Life: autobiography of a stray".

In both cases, the parents prefer that the content of the books be free of more
sensitive issues (ie. sex, drug use, etc.).

I appreciate any and all suggestions! Please reply to me directly. Thank you.
