The absolute best book I have read this year is The Glass Castle by
Jeannette Walls. It is about a family who lived in poverty for years
and moved from place to place (including the desert and a West Va.
mining town) despite the fact that the father was an engineer and the
mother a teacher. Neither parent really wanted the responsibility of a
family and a full time job to interfere with their creativity. The
father's dream was to one day build a Glass Castle for the family to
live in. This is a true story of the life of Ms. Walls, who recently
left a journalist's job at MSNBC for a career as a writer. The mother
and father both chose homelessness over a more stable lifestyle even
later when the grown children tried to intervene and offer their help.
