I wasn't going to say anything with this thread. I tend to talk too much anyway. I
couldn't help myself as I am tired from too many classes and it is cold outside and
I just read David's post about a pending ice storm in MO - so here are my thoughts -
My head tends to swim when we discuss terminology. I guess it was all those years
in the 60s 70s and 80s when we coukdn't figure out who we were and where we worked
and all those conversations (starting in library school) about whether we were a
profession or not.
I tend to call the OPAC the catalog or the online catalog or the card catalog -
depends on what I think of first. It is called the OPAC (online catalong) on the
students' laptops.

I also call the space the Library and myself a Librarian.

I agree with you completely! Why shouldn't it be called the library
database or the library search engine.
And our course is now called technical processing of materials.
Shouldn't we call it processing, not cataloging?

Subject: Question and Thought regarding Card Catalog

This has been on my mind for several days and now I am asking for your
thoughts on the matter. Our district continues to use the term "card
catalog" for students who access the library resources from any library
computer within many schools. My question/thoughts about the matter
are:
1. Are students now even more confused? Where are the cards? Where
is the catalog? This online feature doesn't resemble anything like what
they associate with the word catalog. Are we teaching terminology to
all students which does not have an association to them?

2. Would it be more helpful to students to use terminology that they
can understand? Are we isolating libraries from children & teens who
are unclear about our terms? Card catalogs have virtually disappeared
during their lifetimes unless they go to a public library in which they
are still utilized along with their online features.

3. If I (we) were to change our terminology, what would be best?
When students see an icon should it read "Library Resources" /
______(name of school) Library / Library Books and More? Other ideas
needed!!

4. We use Destiny and it is so much more than the old traditional
card catalog with the customized library webpage with links to more
resources. In my mind, this is similar to asking a teen to call an IPOD
a tape recorder. Although there are similarities, technology has
brought us so much further.

5. Is "cataloging" then to be considered an outdated term - in which
only librarians use?
Thoughts please!

I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara
Kingsolver. The family spends a year eating only what grows near to
their
home, raising some of their own food and working with neighbors and
other
farmers for the rest. It has fascinating and horrific information
regarding
food, American food culture (what food culture? McDonald's?) and what
is
takes to create the food we eat. For example, it takes 9 energy
calories to
produce and ship one food calorie in America.

My husband and I are seriously thinking of packing up and moving to

I've been joking that we can just move back if we have to - but that's

1) Biggest concern - job. How are the prospects for a New York State

2) We are looking at living, for now, in the area around Charlotte -

looki=

3) How big of a culture shock/change is this going to be for two people
who=

Subject: TAR: printing labels in AR Enterprise

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to print book labels for the books in the
library that now have tests since we upgraded to AR
Enterprise. I'm having the hardest time getting them to
line-up.
They are just slightly off on my laser printer and wildly
off on my deskjet. I unchecked auto-rotate and I've also
left it checked but I can't get then to print correctly.
Before I call Ren Learn, has anyone else had this problem
and how did you fix it?

Thanks.
