I lose books every year that are stamped, barcoded and have card holders in the back. I finally decided it was more trouble than it was worth. One less thing to worry about!!! Jennifer Garcia, Librarian Uvalde Junior High School P.O. Box 1909 Uvalde, TX 78802 (830)591-2980 garciaj@ucisd.net >>> Donna Steel Cook <donnasteelcook@YAHOO.COM> 12/9/2007 2:35 PM >>> I was taught, back in the ice age of librarianship (the 1980s) that "we stamp page 23 in each book so that, if a book is stolen, we can open to page 23, show the property stamp, and catch the thief red handed." I quit stamping page 23 decades ago. I just open the book randomly and stamp down somewhere in white space. Counting out to page 23 drove me to distraction. The idea that I might someday catch a book thief red-handed by opening to page whatever and showing the miscreant the proof of his thievery continues to amuse me. It is one of those "library things" that makes the job delightful in unexpected ways. On the same note, I was taught that we stamp inside on the hard cover of the book because the thief might tear out a page to cover her perfidy, but, surely, she won't tear off the cover. It helps to have a reason for doing these hundred details it takes to get a book safely into circulation--even if they are unrealistic on some level. I only stamp title page now. Sandra Lingo <slingo47@FUSE.NET> wrote: All the librarians in our district stamp a certain page with the library's name and address. I've been dutifully stamping page 53 of every new book for five years, and I have no idea why I do it. I stamp the title page and the pocket. It's time-consuming stamp another page, and it surely doesn't add to the aesthetic appeal of the book. Do you do this? I'd say this was a stupid question, but surely no librarians believe there IS a stupid question:) -- Sandra Lingo, Librarian Delhi Middle School 5280 Foley Road Cincinnati, Ohio 45238 slingo47@fuse.net -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
