In my training, the title page had a check mark over the first letter of the first
word in the title (that isn't The, A, An) and underlined the first three letters of
the author's last name to indicate how the secretary should set up the main entry
card when she typed them. (We're going back to the 70s, here.) On the verso, we
put the call # information, including barcode # (then it was copy number).

I've inherited some libraries with books that have the price, etc. on the verso and
I assume it was because it's quicker to have the information in the book if it's
damaged than to have to go and pull up the main entry card. Personally, I think
having the price and the order date in the catalog is enough, although if you
wanted to find out who ordered a book or how long it had been in your collection
you might want to have all that info in hand, so to speak.

Subject: writing on title page

As long as this and secret stamping are coming up---

Just WHY do we write info on the title page? I do it because my
cooperating librarian had me do it during my practicum last year--I put
date of order, price and barcode number. But he didn't really have a good
reason why we do it, and I'm not sure why, either!

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution,
man. I wouldn't mess with them." Michael Moore
