... the reason I was given back in the 70's... was that the information was
available immediately...as a time saver... if the need arose that you needed
re-order info for any reason... as a solo librarian, I hated having to take the
time to look any of this info up when I needed it... and the need arose more often
that you would think... I stopped putting it in for awhile ... but went back to
putting it in... because in the long run, it saved me time. But what really saved
me time... before automation... was that on the DATE DUE CARD under the Copy Number
in the back of the book I put the price of the book. That way when I had a lost
book and a student needed to pay for it, I didn't have to run to the back room to
the Shelf List and frantically look it up (Frantically... when I had a long line of
parents or students wanting to know what their Obligation was ... and of course,
sure they had returned it MANY MOONS ago... and that I was somehow responsible for
their
 predictment.)

Nobody has mentioned it specifically... but did you also mean, adding on the
title page, the author's death date if deceased, or full name if abbreviated? The
reason for this was for bibliographic information... but at the high school level,
I do not ever recall being asked for this information, so it was something I ceased
to do long ago.

Just WHY do we write info on the title page? I do it because my
cooperating librarian had me do it during my practicum last year--I put
date of order, price and barcode number. But he didn't really have a good
reason why we do it, and I'm not sure why, either!

"I really didn't realize the librarians were, you know, such a dangerous
group. They are subversive. You think they're just sitting there at the
desk, all quiet and everything. They're like plotting the revolution,
man. I wouldn't mess with them." Michael Moore
