We have selected The Legend of Freedom Hill by Linda Jacobs Altman for our One Book, One School program in February. I am working on a list of lesson plan ideas, websites and other resources for our teachers to use to integrate this book across the curriculum. All classroom and specialist teachers will focus on this book for two weeks in February. We will culminate our event with a family night event - Journey to Freedom Hill - during which all families will have an opportunity to tour the school and see works produced by the students related to this book. Summary: During the California Gold Rush Rosabel, and African American, and Sophie, a Jew, team up and search for gold to buy Rosabel's mother her freedom from a slave catcher. The themes of The Legend of Freedom Hill are: California Gold Rush, African American History, Interracial Friendship, Jewish Interest, Bravery, Slavery, and Kindness/Giving. Subject headings: Gold mining and gold, fugitive slaves, African Americans, Jews, California. If you have any ideas, links or suggestions, please send them my way! Thank you for your help!
