I ordered some cameras from Today's Classroom earlier this year. They
have a set of 6 with 640X480 resolution. It says each will take 26
pics. That set was $261.88 back in the fall. They also have a
different set (which I purchased) with the same resolution that come
with 8MB built in memory and will take SD memory cards. I bought them
for $417.83 and then purchased memory cards to allow more pics. I also
purchased rechargeable camera batteries from Walmart since they stay
charged longer. It was a good investment for us since we have them to
use in the future now.

Subject: TARGET: TECH: Digital Cameras - Cheap!

Hi all,

For a project I am doing with our health teacher we need to buy 25
digital cameras that would allow students to take a picture of
everything they eat and drink for one week. We need the cameras to hold
a charge for that long, store about 40 pictures (low quality), that are
easy to use, relatively easy to get pictures off of AND that will cost
us less than $50 each (hopefully more like $20 each). I know we are not
going to get super nice pictures with a camera that's this cheap, but
the things I'm seeing out there as I browse around look REALLY low end.
Can anyone recommend a similar camera they might have used that they
liked (or at least didn't hate). We really want to keep the price low
since we have to buy in such volume and we don't want parents to have to
be responsible for a very expensive piece of equipment. If you can
suggest something, please specify brand, model, and a vendor if
possible.

We had considered going with disposable cameras, but when we factor in
the cost of developing/printing the costs seem prohibitively high for
something we won't be able to use again. And we'll be doing the project
with 75 kids, so if we use disposables, we'd actually need 75, instead
of dividing the classes into three groups and sharing 25 digitals.

Any advice? I'm incorporating the project into a grant application, so
I'll need the info by 2/14. I'll post a hit if there is interest.

Thanks!

I use an HP printer/scanner. It is perfect for small projects and
scans in color or black and white.

I purchased it when working on National Board at home and wanted to
make copies. I only paid about 100.00 for it and years later is working
perfectly.

Hello, Wonderful LM_Netters!!!

I am in need of your help (again)! I have a teacher who is
interested in starting Creative Writing Program here at my
Middle School (Gr 6-8). She read about the Washington DC
Creative Writing Program, and is wanting to start a similar
program here.

She wants to know about costs (materials, publishing, speakers,
teachers...), grants, curriculum, materials, anything that will
help her get this program jump started! If you have any
information or advice, we both would be VERY appreciative!

THANKS!!!!
Denise

=A0Hi folks,

Since many of us use the NETS Standards in our districts, I thought this
might be of interest.

Still a cryin=B9 shame that these aren=B9t correlated to the AASL
Student
Standards. Have you been e-mailing Julie Walker <jwalker@ala.org>and Don
Knezek <dknezek@iste.org> asking why we need two sets of standards, not

?

ISTE releases draft of new tech standards
Organization seeks feedback on major refresh of its National Educational
Technology Standards for students
By Laura Devaney, Associate Editor, eSchool News
February 7, 2007=20

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has just
completed a draft of its National Educational Technology Standards
(NETS)
for students--a groundbreaking paradigm for what young people should
know
about technology and what they should be able to do with it before
graduating. Now, ISTE is asking educators for feedback on the new draft.

ISTE first issued its NETS for students in 1998, and this framework has
since found its way into the standards of at least 45 U.S. states. Now,
nearly 10 years later--and having also issued NETS for teachers and
administrators--ISTE is in the process of revising its NETS to keep pace
with the changing demands of advancing technology and a new global
economy.

A number of forces have prompted ISTE to update its technology
standards,
said Don Knezek, the group's chief executive.

"The standards' age, the globalization of education, new developments in
technology, and changing demographics of learners ... were all good
indicators that the standards should be updated," he said.

Rising challenges to the nation's leadership in innovation and its
standing
atop the world's economy also were factors, he added.

"While the original NETS identified skills and knowledge every student
needed to succeed in the technology and information environment that was
emerging in 1998, there was still a tone of concentrating on the
tools--the
technology [itself]," Knezek said.

In contrast, "these new student standards focus on skills and knowledge
tha=
t
students need to learn effectively and live productively in an
increasingly
digital society ... Cognitive and learning skills, as well as creativity
an=
d
innovation, are the focus now--and information and media literacy are
also
elevated [in importance]."

Knezek described the changes as a shift away from a focus on "competency
with [technology] tools" and toward a focus on the "skills required in a
digital world to produce and innovate" using technology.

The differences can be gleaned by looking at the categories that define
eac=
h
set of standards.=20

In the original standards, the skills necessary to define technology
proficiency were outlined across six categories: basic operations and
concepts; social, ethical, and human issues of technology use;
productivity
tools; communication tools; research tools; and problem-solving and
decision-making tools. Under "communication tools," for example, you
would
find, "Students (A) use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and
interact with peers, experts, and other audiences; and (B) use a variety
of
media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to
multiple audiences."

The revised draft standards also are organized into six categories:
creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; research and
information retrieval; critical thinking, problem solving, and decision
making; digital citizenship; and technology operations and concepts.

Under "communication and collaboration," you would find, "Students (A)
collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts, and others
employin=
g
a variety of digital media and formats; (B) communicate information and
ideas effectively to multiple audiences utilizing a variety of media and
formats; (C) develop cultural understanding and global awareness by
engagin=
g
with learners of other cultures; and (D) contribute to project teams to
produce original works." To tackle its NETS refresh, ISTE established a
project leadership team made up of current staff members, as well as
member=
s
from the original NETS Leadership Team. The refresh process began at
last
year's National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in San Diego,
and
ISTE hopes to release the final version of its updated standards at this
year's NECC in Atlanta June 24-27.

Using the original NETS development process as a model, ISTE has been
collecting input from as many stakeholders as possible through town hall
meetings and various online channels. For information about how you can
contribute, see the group's NETS Refresh web page:
http://www.iste.org/nets-http://www.iste.org/nets-refresh.

Through its NETS Refresh Project, ISTE also will be reviewing and
revising
its NETS for teachers and administrators. ISTE plans to release its new
teacher standards at NECC 2008 and its new administrator standards at
NECC
2009, the conference's 30th anniversary.

The NETS Refresh Project is sponsored by Adobe Systems, Apple Inc.,
Intel
Corp., Microsoft Corp., Pearson Education, Promethean, SMART
Technologies,
and Questia Media.=20

Our yearbook has a section of "favorites" where students vote for their

winning items used as props--e.g.., 7th graders reading a Harry Potter =

It occurred to me that this may be a violation of copyright. Before I go

Hi All,
Here are the suggestions I received regarding an 8th grade summer
read. Thank you all for your help!

*******************

Turnabout by Margaret Petersen Haddix. About two elderly women in a
nursing home who agree to participate in a medical experiment. They
are injected with a drug which makes them age backwards. Wonderful and
thought-provoking.

Armageddon Summer, by Jane Yolen and Bruce Coville. Alternates
points-of-view between teenage boy and girl. Each is brought into a
camp of a religious cult by one parent. Very striking.

Would struggles against a government count as individual vs. society?
Then Julia Alvarez' Before We Were Free.

Our eighth graders loved their summer reading assignment and I think
it falls under your general theme: The Lightning Thief by Rick
Riordan.

I just finished Uglies by Scott Westerfeld - a great read and
definitely meets your theme. Then you have the follow ups for kids
who want to - Pretties and then Specials.

Not really fun but fits the theme and solid....Lizzie Bright and the
Buckminster boy by Gary Schmidt. Printz and Newbery honor last year.

How about 'Esperanza Rising', by Pam Mu=F1oz Ryan. It's about a rich
Mexican girl who has to flee her home and goes to California to work
in the fields, and how she adapts to her new home and her new status
in life.

The Outsiders by SE Hinton

Airball, My Life In Briefs by L.D. Harkrader

Among the Hidden by Haddix
Invitation to the Game by Hughes are two titles I've used with eighth
grade book discussion groups.

THE OUTSIDERS BY S.E. HINTON

THE CHOSEN BY CHAIM POTOK

TOUCHING SPIRIT BEAR BY BEN MIKAELSEN

THE GIVER BY LOIS LOWRY (READ IN GRADE SCHOOLS, BUT
THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE BOOK UNTIL
THEY'RE MUCH OLDER)

The Uglies Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld is really good.

Our 8th grade boys love Runner by Deuker. And many of them are crazy
about Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie by Lubar. It took one of them saying
it was the best book he ever read for others to try it, thoug

I Am David
The Sunflower - Simon Wiesenthal
Stuck in Neutral - Terry Trueman (sp?)

The Schwa Was Here (can't remember author)

We are doing our book club this time with Touching Spirit Bear. I think
it
would be perfect for your theme. The kids are loving it.
