Good morning! After receiving no responses to my inquiry about creating a birthday card to teach almanac skills (though I received many requests for the lesson)I started to create my own. As luck would have it, I just outlined the lesson when I came across the original lesson in School Library Media Activities Monthly. It is in the January 2007 issue and is called 'Using an Almanac for a Birthday Bash'. The idea is to have each student use the World Almanac to create a personal birthday card. The card will highlight events that happened during the year in which the student was born. After teaching basic almanac skills (ie. index, headings, maps, pictures of year, etc.) students will have a choice of answering different questions to put on their card. Examples of questions include: who won the World Series who won the Super Bowl who won the Nobel Peace Prize What is your zodiac sign Month, day, year you will turn 21 (perpetual calendar) Find an entertainer who shares your birthday What important event happened in the year you were born What is the meaning of your first name? Etc. I plan on introducing the questions and brainstorming with the kids what keywords they could use to find the information in the index to answer the questions. Students can then choose four questions of interest and fill in a template you've created for a baseball type card. (Using the perpetual calendar involves a bit of work but once you get the hang of it there are all kinds of possibilities for kids to explore.) Cut and paste a digital photo of the student on the front and voila! Good luck. Kate Summerlin, LMS A.W.
