Hello all,
My original post was:
Our 7th grade is looking too add/replace/"get some more modern" titles they read as
a class. We're looking for replacements & additional titles for some books they
currently read.

Can you tell me what novels your 7th grade reads? Or, can you think of any more
"modern" replacements for some of the following titles?

Pacific Crossing by Gary Soto
A Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter
Cold River by William Judson
Call of the Wild by Jack London

Here are the responses I got:

Our 7th grade reads Crispin
Erin Fitzpatrick-Bjorn

You might look at House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer.
Janet Pedersen

Some of my 7th grade students' favorites were:
City of Ember Jeanne DuPrau
Zack's Lie Jack Smith
Jack's Run Jack Smith
Jason's Gold Will Hobbs
Wanda Jones

Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria McKernan, and Fish by L.S. Matthews would both
make good substitutions for the "survival' novel. Shackleton is a fictional
first-hand account of the expedition to Antarctica, where despite all odds and
every diaster, everyone survived. Fish is a modern survival story about a
missionary family in Africa who must quickly leave to avoid war, told from the
perspective of their child. Both stories are absolutely gripping.

When I worked at a middle school, the teachers taught:
The Giver - Lois Lowry
Stuck in Neutral - ?
Louise Leonard

We had author Ben Mikaelsen visit in November, and the whole middle school read
"Touching Spirit Bear" and really enjoyed it. They also started asking for his
other books, like "Petey" and "Tree Girl". If you're looking for a multicultural
read, try "A Single Shard".
