A couple of years ago I whined to LM_NET about our new principal. She had eliminated our sustained silent reading program telling us it was not supported by data. We now have yet another new principal, who re-instituted the program. She thinks that the 20 minutes per block on Fridays encouraging students to read for pleasure is a good thing! Our circulation is way up, but more than that, we find that students are more apt to recommend books to their peers. We are getting many more requests for specific titles! Our principal has gone a step further and found funding to support a "Seen Outside And Reading" (SOAR) reading incentive programs. Teachers have cards to pass out to students they see pleasure reading. The cards are then submitted for a drawing. Every week, 4 students will receive a $10 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble. The student winners are loving it. We give them the option of having their photos posted on the LMC website with a recommendation for a book. Take a look at this week's winners at: http://collier.k12.fl.us/nhs/lmc And remember, when things seem their bleakest...this too shall pass! Have a great weekend everyone!
