The speech and debate team is looking for copyright information on a
piece called Ashley by Claudia Demonde. Someone found the piece, and
copied it, but did not get the citation information, which would be
needed if they are to use it in a competition. I have done the usual
internet searches and can't seem to find it anywhere: it must be part of
an anthology. I am sending this out in the hope that someone may have
heard of it before, or may be smarter than I am when it comes to
ferreting it out.
The piece is a short story that begins with "They told me that I
shouldn't keep her. That it would ruin my life. That I was so young."
It is told from the point of view of a young single mother whose
daughter died when she fell off a merry-go-round. It is basically some
of her memories of the daughter, named Ashley. The mother feels some
guilt that her daughter died and talks about her anger at the girl's
father, memories of the fair, and the day that Ashley died.
