[LM_NET] Prairie novel - 2nd grade

Dear all,
Our 2nd graders are reading the Sarah, Plain and Tall trilogy, and we are having 
some complaints about degree of difficulty and appropriate content .  I concur - 
2nd graders don't have a clue about mail-order brides!
 
Can anyone in this august group recommend another novel about plains/prairie life 
that is more age-appropriate.  Something between the "I can read " Laura Ingalls 
Wilder and the real thing.
