Also, The Sacrifice (Salem Witch hunt) by Meyer, Girl in Blue (Civil War)by Rinaldi, Ashes of Roses by Auch, Fever, 1793 by Anderson, Rodzina by Cushman, Ghost Soldier by Alphin, A Drowned Maiden's Hair by Schlitz. Number the Stars, the Midwife's Apprentice, Northern Lights. Well, Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Gray is wonderful for world history studies. It's the story of a 12 year old wandering minstral during the Middle Ages. A Single Shard" by Linda Sue Park "Fever 1793" by Laurie Halse Anderson "Leonardo's Shadow" by Christopher Grey "The King of Mulberry Street" by Donna Jo Napoli And, my personal favorite, an oldie but a goodie: "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott My 8th grade boys who were readers really liked: Killer Angels and the other Shaara books Legend of Bass Reeves (Gary Paulsen) Bro (Richard Peck) Exiled: memoirs of a camel (Kathleen Karr) Eyes of the Emperor (Graham Salisbury) Blood on the River (Elisa Carbone) Louis L'Amour books Year of the Hangman (Gary Blackwood) My Brother Sam is Dead (James & Christopher Collier - any of theirs you could get!) The Winter People (Joseph Bruchac) Journal of Biddy Owens and Fallen Angels (Walter Dean Myers; he has several new ones too that fit historical fiction) The Bone Wars (Kathryn Lasky ) Down the Yukon (Will Hobbs; he has lots that are lower reading level) Red Cap (Clifton Wisler) just put together a book list that has grade levels and interest levels. You would want to look at the MG - Book Levels 4-6 I think. Since you can sort the list based on the two criteria mentioned above, you can easily find those titles that meet your need. Look at http://www.quizlistinteractive.com/AcceleratedReader_BookLists.aspx in the left column "Realistc fic/Modern Realism. Sort appropriately and create a printer list that you can print and keep. Out of the Dust by Karen Heese Standing in the Light by Mary Pope Osborne (Any of the Dear America or My Name is America series) Nothing to Fear by Kohler The Watsons Go to Birmingham, by Christopher Paul Curtis Fever, 1793 Fever - Laurie Halse Anderson Witch of Blackbird Pond - Elizabeth George Speare Gary Blackwood's Year of the Hangman For my money, you just can't go wrong with Ann Rinaldi. I just finished "Numbering the Bones" about the "bright yellow" daughter of a slave owner and his slave who lived in the shadow of Andersonville Prison at the end of the Civil War. I also loved "In My Father's House" based on the true story of a plantation ower who leaves his Manasas home to flee the fighting, only to settle in Appomatax Courthouse, VA. His parlor becomes the scene of Lee's surrender Grant. And there are so many more. Her research is impecible and her writing is even better Stones in Water by Napoli Weasel (and sequel) by DeFelice Blood on the River 1607 by Carbone Rifles for Watie by Keith is my favorite. WWII: Number the Stars The Devil's Arithmetic Old West: Mr. Tuckett (and rest of series) Some of my faves: Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson A True and Faithful Narrative by Katherine Sturtevant No Shame No Fear by Ann Turnbull Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson Viking Warrior by Judson Roberts Eva Underground by Dandi Daley Mackall Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch Out of the Dust Avi Fever 1793 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
