I am replying to the request to know what is AASL's stand on all of this. First, we are in contact with the other youth divisions to explore a joint comment. Second, AASL has a set of resource guides on-line. One of these is a Selection Policy & Review Process, I got there today and here is the link http://www.ala.org/aaslTemplate.cfm?Section=resourceguides&Template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=15431 if this URL does not work go to www.aasl.org, click on Professional Tools then click on Resource Guides. An Intellectual Freedom guide is also found there. Third, the Intellectual Freedom Committee at ALA and AASL will be there to support anyone who may have this book challenged. My own (not necessarily AASL endorsed) comments. 1) The reporter in the NYT article was not as diligent as they should have been. They never contacted ALA nor AASL for comment, many reporters doing this type of article will contact the national association representing school libraries for comments. Also, they did not notice that in the bottom of each of our LMNet emails is a statement of copyright. 2) This is a hard lesson to learn but this is a public forum. Therefore, think twice before you post. Nancy Dickenson made a very good point about repling to the sender vs. the whole list. 3) After reading "The Higher Power of Lucky" myself I feel I can easily defend having it in my elementary library. After all, my copy came to me earlier this year as a Junior Library Guild selection which means it passed a review committee before coming to me.
