As a hs librarian, I will not have to deal with this controversy, but I can 
say that you are right on about the interests of the age level, at least for 
hs. Many of my students are obsessed with social issue books like "A child 
called It." While they will read books aimed at a younger audience, the 
books must have an older "look." This just sounds like a problem with a 
misplaced target audience rather than a word choice issue.
