There is a big difference between what I "know" to be right (in the
"perfect" library world), and what is practical and doable in my unique
situation. We all want to keep our jobs, and have to pick the battles we
are willing to fight. What's right for you may not work for me. There is
also a big difference between what a school can do (get away with) and what
a public library can. When parents send their kids to school, they all
assume the school will instill "their" values in their personal student.
That obviously causes an immidiate problem for librarians. If we make an
error in judgment on what to purchase, we better err on the side of caution.
If we put in a book that is too "liberal" those parents will raise a
fuss. No parent is going to come in and tell us we should have "Playboy" in
the library, but, put in "Lucky", and we'll sure hear from someone. It's a
shame.
