Hi, I manage a 5th grade Battle of the Books program at our school. I have been "banned" from using "The Westing Game" as our 6th grade ELA teachers discovered that I was using it, and our district has a restricted list of titles preserved for teaching at specific grade levels. Shel Silverstein is on the list too; go figure! Anyway, I inadvertently ran into this blockade because it was my first year in the district and no one had shared the district policy with me. Although I'm not teaching the title, I can no longer have students read it for Battle. Don't even get me started on the philosophy behind this district mandate.... Unfortunately, I wasted around $100 as I had already purchased/processed sets of the title for use in The Battle. I need another mystery title to replace "The Westing Game" but cannot come up with a great alternative; any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
