Hi All,
Please reconsider - it is not the teacher's responsibility to prove
plagiarism.
It is the student's responsibility to prove they haven't plagiarised.

All student work MUST meet the following criteria or fail:
1. Demonstrate the depth and breadth of your research by intext and end
of text referencing
2. Demonstrate your understandings by writing in your own words

If you have to ask the question/s - where did this come from? or is this
your voice? - then they have failed to comply and risk failing the
assignment.

Students understand this approach much better than the rhetoric about
ciminal intent and plagiarism, since many of them don't realise they are
plagiarising from the Internet - words like public domain, open source,
free web, etc. are confusing. They also have a culture of information
use that is based on cut and paste, where originality, copyright and IP
are long lost due to the media itself.

Strategy - get a piece of reflective writing at least once a term from
each student to verify the level of language development and use. This
can be used for comparative purposes when asking the second question. If
you doubt the words belong to the student, then where is the reference?

So much easier for the teacher, who is no longer playing policeman,
judge and jury.

GEN: advice on searching for plagiarism

I am sending a quick note to help people use the Internet more
effectively when searching for plagiarism.

The first thing to know is that most search engines cannot handle more
than 10 words at a time. If small phrases, both with and without
quotes, are not producing results, take the 10 most uncommon words and
use them to search. Do not use quotes.

Finally, if your student speaks another language, you may wish to
translate the quote into the other language and do another search.
