As Chair of the American Library Association’s Notable Children’s Recordings
Committee, I would like to invite those who are attending the ALA conference
in Seattle to drop in to our open meetings. I am sure you will gain valuable
insight into audio evaluation process, and learn about some terrific titles.
We will meet at the Pan Pacific Seattle hotel in the Gateway room at the
following times:
Friday, January 19, 2-5:30 p.m. and 8-10 p.m. 
Saturday, January 20, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Sunday, January 21, 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:30-5:30 p.m. 
Monday, January 22, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. (only if needed)

The attached discussion list shows the 82 titles currently under
consideration for inclusion for this year’s Notable list. This year, we
received 467 submissions totaling over 1,800 hours of recordings. After the
Mid-Winter meeting, the final Notable Children’s Recordings list will be
posted on the website below (where you will see last year’s list).

Although this is my final year as a member of the Notable Children’s
Recoding Committee, I will not be saying a final farewell to the world of
audiobooks. On January 23rd, I begin my tenure as Chair of the Odyssey Award
for Best Audiobook, jointly sponsored by ALSC, YALSA, and Booklist Magazine.
I am thrilled to be part of this award’s very first year, and to be part of
a great team that will name the winner and honor titles for ages 0-18! Find

Titles are listed below in the order that they will be discussed during the
American Library Association’s Mid-Winter meeting in Seattle. We will begin
discussion at number 16, as earlier titles were discussed at last summer’s
ALA Annual. 

1.      The Silver Spoon of Solomon Snow.  5.25hr. Recorded Books, CS,
$39.75; CD, $49.75. 800-638-1304. Elementary/Middle School      Jenny
Sterlin reads Kaye Umansky's romp about a foundling searching for his true
parents with verve and just the right amount of exaggeration, exacting every
ounce of humor from the story; particularly splendid is her hilarious
portrayal of little Rosabella, in equal parts charming and obnoxious.

2.      Day of Tears. 3hr. Recorded Books, CS, $19.75; CD, $29.75.
800-638-1304. Middle School/YA. The largest slave auction in U.S. history is
the backdrop for Julius Lester's powerful recording, read by an ensemble
cast, detailing multiple viewpoints in a profound and memorable manner.

3.      The Telling Pool. 11hr. Recorded Books, CS, $75.75; CD, $30.
800-638-1304. Middle School/YA. A powerful narration by Gerard Doyle,
highlighted by the use of many different voice interpretations, brings The
Crusades and the Arthurian legend together in this coming-of-age quest by
David Clement-Davies.

Elementary. In the fifth book in the series, Poppy must return to her home
and confront family issues ranging from a rebellious son to a resentful
father.

5.      The Giants and the Joneses. 3.5hr. Recorded Books, CS, $29.75; CD,
$29.75. 800-638-1304. Elementary.       In this fanciful tale written by
Julia Donaldson, Jumbeelia the Giant proves on a trip down the beanstalk
that iggly plops (little people) do exist and brings the family back to the
land of Groil in this enchanting work narrated by Patricia Conolly.

6.      The Tenth City. 5hr. Brilliance Audio, CS, $62.25; CD, $69.25.
800-648-2312. Elementary/Middle School. In this third of Patrick Carman’s
‘Elyon’ series, narrator Aasne Vigesaa concludes the exciting and perilous
adventures of Alexa Daly, the young girl whose destiny is to save her
homeland. 

7.      The Penderwicks. 6.75hr. Listening Library, CS, $35; CD, $50.
800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School. The four Penderwick sisters are on
vacation with their father in Massachusetts where their adventures are
stunningly narrated by Susan Debaker, who gives each a unique voice to go
with their individual personalities so well-written by Jeanne Birdsall.

8.      The Wall and the Wing. 8hr. Brilliance Audio, CS, $69.25; CD,
$82.25. 800-648-2312. Elementary/Middle School. A fantastical tale set in an
alternate New York City peopled with eccentrics and sometimes disconcerting
characters finds a just-right quirky production featuring reader Renée
Raudman.

Preschool/Elementary.   Songs & rhymes to build early reading skills
performed by Cathy Bollinger.

10.     I, Coriander. 7.5hr. Listening Library, CS, $40; CD, $50.
800-733-3000. Middle School/YA. Narrator Juliet Stevenson mesmerizes
listeners with her tour-de-force performance of Sally Gardner's intricate
and multi-layered tale, in which a young girl living in repressive Puritan
London is pulled into a fairyland full of wonders and dangers.

11.     Jim Gill Sings Moving Rhymes for Modern Times. 45min. Jim Gill
Music, CD, $15. 708-763-9864. Preschool/Elementary.     The title says it
all: preschoolers and kindergartners will be dancing in their seats as they
listen to Gill's fourteen lively, kid-pleasing songs, enriched by Gill's
unpretentious voice and a multiplicity of instruments and styles.

12.     Ptolomy's Gate. 15.5hr. Listening Library, CS, $65; CD, $85.
800-773-3000. Elementary/Middle School/YA.      Simon Jones continues his
impeccable narration in this conclusion of the Bartimaeus Trilogy.

13.     So Much to Tell You. 3.5hr. Bolinda Audio, CD, $28. 888-235-2019.
Middle School/YA.       Narrator Kate Hoskin brilliantly voices the internal
emotion expressed in the journal of an adolescent suffering from selective
mutism.  

14.     Lulubelle and Her Bones. 1.25hr. Bolinda Audio, CD, $18.
888-235-2019. Elementary/Middle School. Nicky Talacko's gentle reading and
varying dialects give this canine adventure just the right combination of
practicality and humor.  Two dogs, one who is so pampered by the Duchess she
doesn't even know she's a dog, and the other a mutt from the streets, run
away together to London.  They discover that life isn't easy but has its
rewards in this lighthearted romp.  

15.     The Truth About Magic. 5.25hr. Bolinda Audio, CD, $40. 888-235-2019.
Elementary/Middle School.       Book One of the "School of Magic" series is
brought to life by Stanley McGeagh's lively narration. Harry Potter fans
will eagerly follow the adventures of Mr. Tipkins and his two human students
in this engaging production. 

16.     Seeker. 10hr. Brilliance Audio, CS, $82.25; CD, $97.25.
800-648-2312. Middle School/YA. Michael Page's narration of this powerful
story of good vs. evil is filled with a wide variety of character voices
that bring this epic about Seeker, Morning Star, Wildman and an elite band
of fighter monks to a dramatic conclusion of sacrifice and characters who
are not as they appear to be.

17.     Shug. 6hr. Recorded Books, CS, $39.75; CD, $49.75. 800-638-1304.
Middle School.  Narrator Liz Morton gives twelve year old Annemarie "Shug"
Wilcox voice as Shug navigates the rough waters of changing family and peer
relationships in author Jenny Hahn's dead-on characterization of middle
graders' casual cruelty toward each other. 

18.     A Brief Chapter in My Impossible Life. 5.5hr. Listening Library, CS,
$35; CD, $45. 800-733-3000. Middle School/YA.   16-year old Simone's year is
filled with discovering the secrets of her past, a big crush on the local
barista, and questioning her strong beliefs; narrator Mandy Seigfried
expertly captures Simone's voice with emotion and realistic teen inflection.


19.     The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. 2hr. Listening Library, CS,
$23; CD, $24. 800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School.   Judith Ivey captures
the voice of china rabbit Edward Tulane as well as those of the characters
encountered in his travels in this story by Kate DiCamillo.

800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School. Paul Fleischman's Newbery Honor book
gives the listener three spellbinding stories in which inanimate objects
communicate with the living.  Paul Michael, Sunsan Denaker, and Lincoln
Hoppe each capture each story's eerie tone.  

21.     The War Diaries of Alistair Fury: Exam Fever. 3.5hr. BBC Audiobooks,
CS, $24.95; CD, $29.95. 800-621-0182. Middle School.    Robert Llewellyn’s
ribald narration brilliantly captures the very British, humorously silly,
and irreverent diary of 11-year old Alistair, who is feeling a bit
untalented and so plans revenge on his bright and athletic older siblings.

22.     Peter and the Shadow Thieves. 10hr. Brilliance Audio, CS, $82.25;
CD, $97.25. 800-648-2312. Elementary/Middle School/YA.  Jim Dale's true to
form mastery of individual voices for each character and his ability to
maintain those voices make this a wonderful audio read of Dave Barry &
Ridley Pearson's fantasy novel.

23.     The Penguin Who Wanted to Find Out. 50min. BBC Audiobooks, CS,

British voice lends a perfect foil to the curiosity of Otto who is simply
trying to discover more about life at 'the bottom of the world' in Jill
Tomlinson's charming work.

800-638-1304. Middle School.    The narrator's clear diction and variety of
dialects tell the story of Rachel who hopes to return to her beloved British
East Africa in 1919 after she is tricked into pretending to be another
family's deceased daughter in order to avoid the orphanage when her own
missionary parents die of the influenza.

Middle School/YA.       Danielle Ferland captures the subtle tones of 14
year- old Debbie and her friends as they explore the complexities of life as
they leave childhood behind in this coming of age story by Lynn Rae Perkins.

26.     Enchantress From the Stars. 10hr. Recorded Books, CS, $67.75; CD,
94.75. 800-638-1304. Middle School/YA.  Sylvia Engdahl's classic tale of an
interstellar clash between magic and science is flowingly voiced by Jennifer
Ikeda.

27.     A Little History of the World. 9hr. Blackstone Audio, CS, $59.95;
CD, $72. 800-729-2665. Middle School/YA.        This non-fiction classic by
E.H. Gombrich, originally written 70 years ago and updated by the author in
2001, is perfectly narrated by Ralph Cosham.

Elementary.     Lisa Renee Pitts narrates Virginia Hamilton's story of
Dreenie's 5th grade journal entries as she, and her class, accept the girl
called Bluish as she recovers from cancer.

behind this mock British reality-show while enjoying the humorous narration
by Tom Lawrence.

800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School. In Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's
imaginative third installment of the Edge Chronicles, John Lee masterfully
brings all the creatures of the Edge to life as Twig, the sky pirate
captain, searches for the lost crew members whom he had promised never to
leave behind.

Preschool/Elementary. Appreciation for the natural world flows from Reed's
elegant instrumentation and lyrical voice.

children and adults will m-m-m melt away in this lively and energetic
collection of original songs by musician Justin Roberts.

888-235-2019. Middle School.    A young Australian sent to London seeks help
for his brother's cancer battle in a superb reading by author Morris
Gleitzman, combining both humor and pathos.

34.     Mao's Last Dancer: Young Reader's Edition. 9hr. Bolinda Audio, CD,
$64. 888-235-2019. Middle School/YA.    An autobiography detailing the
journey from a poverty-stricken Chinese village during the Cultural
Revolution to ballet stardom in the West is given a nuanced reading by Paul
English, sure to fascinate listeners of all ages.

Perfect for bedtime, Hondo the dog and Fabian the cat's day is gently given

honor book.

the bumbling Duke Modeset and a cast of colorful characters who attempt to

Elementary/Middle School/YA.    Narrator Anne Towmey's gentle, even reading
of this richly imaginative tale concerning dreams, family, and the stories
we are made of is quiet and serene, highlighting the language and

right sense of quirky to this magical story of a third grade girl's ability
to learn about other points of view by becoming someone else--even her
principal!

Hudson,  who begins a journal addressed to his unborn sibling as a way of
coping with the newness of high school, unrequited love, changing
relationships,  and family changes including his mom's pregnancy.

800-733-3000. Middle School.    Penny's family has been torn apart by
secrets and prejudice, but during her 11th summer in 1953 she begins to
discover the power of the truth in this story of the everyday and the
extraordinary, beautifully interpreted by actress Amber Sealey.

just the right tickle in his inflection.  Ralph messes up Sarah's Egyptian
project but of course impresses everyone, including himself in the end!

800-242-7737. Middle School.    Once again all is not right in Ingrid's
world.  Colleen Delaney voices Ingrid's concern about her father and brother
beautifully.  Delaney's characterization of others adds to the mystery.

44.     Stella etc: Sweet Talking T.J. 4.5hr. BBC Audiobooks, CS, $32.95;
CD, $34.95. 800-621-0182. Elementary/Middle School.     Jennifer Bryce's
scrumptious accent captures every laugh in her telling of Stella's new life
in sleepy PortBay which is a long way from London in more ways than one!

800-621-0182. Elementary/Middle School. Jelly Jackson's gift is being a star
netball player, and when competitive sports are taken away from her school
she finds her voice and effects changes in Rose Impey's book read by the
British actress Gillian Walton.

$30. 800-733-3000. Middle School/YA.    Richard Peck scores a winner again
as he writes about PeeWee and Jake in 1914, along with a tornado, librarian
interviews, drag racing, and bobbed hair in this delightful book narrated by
Lara Everly.

Preschool. Carnie Wilson has created a beautiful collection of lullabies and
soft songs for young children, from classics to original songs, that will
simply warm your heart and make you wish that your arms were heavy with the
weight of a sleeping infant.

800-638-1304. Elementary/Middle School. Masterfully narrated by John
Keating, the second installment of the Ranger's Apprentice series finds
apprentice Will and his friend, Horace battling to save their kingdom,
Araluen from the evil Morgarth who has built a secret bridge into their
land.

Middle School/YA.       For those who have ever wondered about the childhood
of James Bond, and why he became the greatest secret agent the world has
ever known, this novel by Charlie Higson will speed them along through
encounters with bullies, scientific experiments gone wrong, and voracious
eels, all masterfully narrated with a variety of voices by Nathaniel Parker.

carefully portrays the emotion of this historical adventure, set in Ancient
Persia, which follows Mitra and her younger brother as they cross the desert
as the servants of a powerful Magus traveling to Bethlehem.

society of perfection finds a true-to-life voice in narrator Carine

seamlessly binds the realism and fantasy in this exceptional animal
allegory. A Newbery Honor book.

800-733-3000. Middle School/YA. Blake is spending time with his mother at
Oxford when a mysterious blank book selects him and plunges him into the
centre of an exciting and dangerous adventure which is expanded by Richard
Easton's dramatic and enchanting reading.

Holocaust as seen through the eyes of an innocent nine-year-old boy that
will stay with the listener long after Michael Maloney's outstanding
narration concludes.

Allen Corduner masterfully narrates Markus Zusak's horrifying and elegant
novel that tells of one foster girl's survival during the Holocaust as she
uses books to help her understand and withstand the emotional and physical
losses of war.

$50. 800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School.    Listeners will enjoy
hard-boiled humor voiced with an Irish lilt by Sean Patrick Reilly in this
tale introducing 12-year-old detective Fletcher Moon.

800-733-3000. Elementary/Middle School. The streets of London are thick with
fog and grave robbers.  A young pickpocket, an aspiring actress, and museum
assistant get tangled in the eerie world of the living dead and an evil
genius trying to rule the world.  Masterfully narrated by Steven Pacey, it's
a heart-stopping race to stop London being overrun by creatures from the
dead.

family-friendly excitement take center stage in this Michael L. Printz Honor

School. Author Morris Gleitzman reads his tale of young Angus who must
fulfill the role of responsible caretaker for not only his younger brother
and sister, but also his self-centered oft-married mother & his many fathers

877-629-6723. Middle School/YA.         Rosemary Sutcliff's classic tale of
mystery & history during Rome's occupation of Great Britain is given a
respectful abridgement and dramatic presentation by Charlie Simpson.

source material, Kerry Shale narrates the life of Jesus in a clear,
forthright manner.

Lewis Carroll's delightful conclusion to Alice's adventures is masterfully
narrated by David Horovitch, Jo Wyatt and a full cast of talented actors.

effects bring to life the story of a frog that wants to fly but has to learn
a hard lesson about the limits of being "A Frog Thing.”

performs as artists & politicians in these vignettes highlighting the
splendors of the Renaissance.

Elementary/Middle School.       Tim Curry's delightfully wicked voice
perfectly suits the 13th volume in the Series of Unfortunate Events which
chronicles the end of the misadventures of the orphaned Baudelaire children
