Hello,
I echo Barbara's remarks on Edward Tulane. I absolutely loved it and had
practically guaranteed to students and parents that it would receive some
sort of acknowledgement, only now to be forced to eat crow. Curiously, a
parent volunteer who had liked The Tale of Despereaux extremely well could
not stand The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. She couldn't put a
finger on exactly why but just knew that she did not like it at all.
Another parent, a few short days later, bounded back to me after I'd
recommended "Edward" to her and said how much she'd loved it.
Have others had this experience? Folks either loved "Edward" or hated it?
I'd really love to pick the Newbery committee members brains and find out
why it could not at least receive an honor. There have been years with four
and even five honor books-I'd love to have discussion on why it wasn't
honored.
Still, I think in years to come it will be greatly loved.
